Your role
The Principal Investment Officer plays an important role in implementing the Forestry strategy. Based on deep sector knowledge, an excellent network and through banking skills, you will be instrumental to further develop and implement FMO’s debt investment strategy in the sector. Through partnerships with forestry companies, likeminded investors, NGO’s, donors, and governments, you will invest in forestry companies that are aligned with our impact objectives. The PIO plays a crucial role in defending and refining FMO’s forestry strategy and will provide strategic input to the departmental business plans and to the overall climate strategy of FMO. The PIO acts as the to-go-to person (internally and externally) for matters related to forestry, setting an example by embodying our values and focusing on solutions.

Your team
The Forestry team is part of the Agribusiness, Food & Water departments and focuses on origination, execution, and management of debt investments in the forestry sector globally. The team works with companies that operate along the forestry value chain including plantations, forest concessions and further processing into construction materials, pulp & paper and other products. The Forestry mandate also covers business models that use private sector funding to restore, rehabilitate, and protect natural forests (nature-based solutions). Together with the Private Equity Forestry team we aim to build a portfolio of sustainable forestry investments of up to Euro 1 billion by 2030.
Your background
Master’s degree in economics, finance, business administration or equivalent. 20+ years of relevant experience, including important business development experience in the forestry sector in emerging markets. Proven experience in structuring project finance type transactions and leading difficult deal negotiations. Deep understanding of and affinity with international environmental, social and human rights standards, including the ones that are particularly relevant to the forestry sector, such as the IFC Performance Standards (IFC Performance Standards), forestry certification schemes (FSC), and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs); Knowledge of the different capital flows that are ready for forestry investments, including those related to voluntary carbon markets (VCM) and REDD+; Thought leader and pioneer with respect to MDB forest financing.
